The nineteenth century American author Edgar Allan Poe is best know for his Gothic fiction. He is also regarded as the inventor of the detective fiction genre, and is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. His most recurring theme deal with questions of death.
Poe became one of the first American authors to become more popular in Europe than in the United States. The Edgar Allan Poe Awards are presented every year by the Mystery Writers of America.
